City of the Sun is an intentional community and census-designated place founded in 1972 on roughly 157 acres in Luna County, New Mexico, on the northern edge of Columbus, about 30 miles south of Deming and 3 miles north of the Mexican border. Run by the nonprofit City of the Sun Foundation, it has a designated off-grid area for alternative housing, solar energy, and composting, with members entitled to large lots. Buildings include underground, adobe, bottle, and tire (Earthship-style) construction.
