About

Indian Lake Estates is an unincorporated platted community on the eastern shore of Lake Weohyakapka (Lake Walk-in-Water), about 14 miles east-southeast of Lake Wales in Polk County, Florida. Developer Leon Ackerman bought the roughly 7,680-acre tract in 1955 and platted a 7,200-acre community that grew to over 8,000 lots along about 200 miles of roads. The original developer went bankrupt in 1965 and it never reached its envisioned size (2020 population 926); many interior lots remain undeveloped rural parcels on well and septic, managed today by the resident nonprofit Indian Lake Estates, Inc.
