Living Energy Farm

Living Energy Farm is an intentional community, organic farm and environmental education center on 127 acres in rural Louisa County, Virginia, founded in 2010. It uses no grid electricity, no generators, no natural gas, no propane and no substantial amount of firewood, running instead on a solar powered direct current microgrid of roughly 250 watts per person, biogas and solar thermal systems. That design costs a fraction of a conventional alternating current off-grid setup, which is the point: the community exists to show a way of living that is affordable rather than aspirational. Members support themselves growing seed for Southern Exposure Seed Exchange and other seed companies.
