Off-Grid Community

About

Monhegan is an island community off the Maine coast with no submarine cable to the mainland power grid. The quasi-municipal Monhegan Plantation Power District generates all of the island's electricity itself, historically burning 30,000 to 35,000 gallons of diesel a year and now running cleaner microturbines alongside a solar array added in a 2016 power station upgrade. Because nothing ties the island to the mainland, surplus power has nowhere to go, so the community sizes its own supply to its own demand.
