About

Breitenbush is an off-grid intentional community and worker-owned cooperative on 154 acres along the Breitenbush River in the Willamette National Forest, about ten miles northeast of Detroit, Oregon. Every facility runs on a hydroelectric plant the members maintain themselves, with diesel generators held in reserve as backup, and the site is the largest private geothermal facility in the Pacific Northwest. A systems team looks after the whole chain: the hydroelectric generator, the water pumping and filtration plant, the geothermal heating, the mineral water pools and the septic systems. The community bought the property in 1985 and formed the cooperative in 1989.
