Rural Subdivision

About

Leilani Estates is a 1964 subdivision of roughly 2,231 one-acre lots in the Puna District of Hawaii Island, about 3 miles south of Pāhoa and 23 miles south of Hilo at around 771 feet elevation. There is no county water, so every home runs on rooftop rain catchment, while grid power, paved roads, and roadside mail delivery are available. In the 2018 Kīlauea lower East Rift Zone eruption, 14 of the 24 fissures opened within the subdivision and roughly 200 homes were destroyed; the remainder of the community survives.
