Off-Grid Community

About

Wonder Valley is an unincorporated Mojave Desert community in San Bernardino County, about 10 miles east of Twentynine Palms and roughly 15 miles northeast of Joshua Tree National Park's east entrance. It grew from the Small Tract Act of 1938, which transferred federal parcels of up to five acres to homesteaders, and thousands of 'jackrabbit' cabins were built during the 1950s and 60s. State Route 62 and Amboy Road are paved, but most interior roads are unpaved and many cabins have no grid water or power, relying instead on solar, hauled water, and septic.
