Rural Subdivision

About

Hawaiian Acres is a large upper-Puna subdivision on Hawaii Island, originally over 12,000 acres divided into roughly 3,944 parcels of about 3 acres each, at 700 to 1,500 feet elevation about 15 miles south of Hilo. Roads are mostly unpaved, carved out of the lava, some requiring four-wheel drive. All homes rely on rooftop rain catchment (no county water), and many properties are off-grid on solar, though grid electricity is available on most roadways. The 2020 population was 3,426 across about 19.4 square miles.
