Rural Subdivision

About

Orchidland Estates is a well-known rural subdivision in the Puna District about 14 miles south of Hilo, spanning over 1,900 acres with 2,491 lots ranging from a quarter acre to 3 acres, subdivided in the late 1950s. Mean annual rainfall around 148 inches supports the rooftop rain-catchment systems every household uses, since county water does not exist there; most roads are graded with some paved main roads, in Lava Zone 3. The Orchidland Community Association, an active nonprofit established in 1979, administers mandatory road-maintenance assessments.
