About

Moonshadow is an off-grid homestead and small eco-village on 300 acres of forested mountainside above the Sequatchie Valley near Whitwell, Tennessee, settled in 1971 when a family began clearing land, planting orchards and building by hand. The site runs on solar electricity and a gravity-fed spring water supply, and the experimental handcrafted buildings scattered across the land are the record of five decades of work. In 1996 the founders turned that experience into the Sequatchie Valley Institute, an education, art and land restoration center built around the working homestead.
