About

The Farm is one of the oldest intentional communities in the United States, founded in 1971 by Stephen Gaskin and about 300 settlers on rural land near Summertown in Lewis County, Tennessee. An initial 1,064 acres was expanded to roughly 1,750 acres held in common through a nonprofit corporation; after the 1983 'Changeover,' members shifted from a collective economy to individual self-support. Residents built their own water and power systems from scratch, and it operates today as a cooperative rural land trust with shared roads and common land.
