About

Slab City occupies 640 acres of public land four miles northeast of Niland, on the concrete slabs left behind when the Marine Corps dismantled Camp Dunlap in 1956. There is no official electricity, running water, sewer or trash collection, and no local law enforcement or administration. Residents run their own solar panels, generators and batteries, and clean water is dispensed from a tank at the community church. Population swings from roughly 150 in the summer heat to several thousand snowbirds in winter.
