About

West Kootenai is a remote community on the west side of Lake Koocanusa within Kootenai National Forest in Lincoln County, Montana, a few miles south of the Canadian border and about 30 road miles from Eureka. It is the site of Montana's oldest Amish settlement (first settled 1974), whose households traditionally live without public grid electricity. The 2020 census recorded 422 residents across about 16 square miles at an elevation of roughly 2,740 feet, with road access only from the south via West Kootenai Road.
