About this plan
What the 12×24 Cabin with Loft is for.
Twelve feet wide keeps every floor and ceiling joist short, so the framing stays light and cheap even though the cabin is 24 feet long. The length is where the room goes: a living area at one end and a kitchen or bath at the other, with the 8-foot-deep loft running the full 24 feet along the back wall above both.
The roof is 10/12 instead of a shallower pitch because a loft needs height. On a 12-foot width, a steeper roof is the difference between a loft you sit up in and one you crawl into.
Windows are spread along both long walls and both ends so no part of a 24-foot room is far from daylight.
Good for
- A narrow lot or a site between trees
- Separating a sleeping loft from a living area below
- A floor joist span short enough for common 2x10s
