About this plan

What the 16×20 A-Frame Style Cabin is for.

A true A-frame runs the roof all the way to the ground, which loses a strip of floor along each side where you cannot stand. This plan sets the same steep roof on 6-foot knee walls instead, so the full 16-foot width is usable and the silhouette still reads as an A-frame.

At 12/12 the roof rises a foot for every foot of run. That is steep enough that snow slides off metal roofing without help, and it leaves room for an 8-foot loft with real headroom.

The big back window is where the view goes. The two front windows flank the door under the porch.

Good for

  • Heavy snow country, since a 12/12 roof sheds snow on its own
  • A tall, open great room with a loft
  • The A-frame look without losing the floor edges to the roof

Common questions

Building the 16×20 A-Frame Style Cabin.

The materials for this 16x20 A-Frame Style Cabin estimate at about $13,245. The biggest lines are framing ($4,149), roofing ($3,261), sheathing ($1,526). That covers the shell: foundation, framing, sheathing, roofing, siding, windows, doors, the porch, the loft and fasteners, at typical U.S. retail prices with a 10 percent waste allowance. It does not include labor, insulation, drywall, interior finishes, plumbing, electrical, or delivery, and local lumber prices vary.

At 320 sq ft, this plan is over the 200 sq ft limit the International Residential Code (section R105.2) uses to exempt small accessory structures, so in most places that adopt that code you should expect to need a building permit. Rules vary by county, and some rural counties do not enforce a residential building code at all, so ask your local building department before you build.

The PDF has six letter-size pages: a cover sheet with the specs, a dimensioned floor plan, front and rear elevations, left and right elevations, a wall-and-roof cross-section, and a foundation plan. The materials list downloads separately as a CSV you can open in Excel, Numbers, or Google Sheets to price at your local lumber yard. There is no signup and no email required. These are concept drawings for planning and estimating, not engineered or stamped construction documents.
