About this plan
What the 14×20 Gambrel Cabin is for.
A gambrel roof breaks each side into a steep lower slope and a shallow upper one. The steep part is almost a wall, so the loft under it has standing room across most of its width, which a gable roof on the same footprint cannot give you.
The trade is framing complexity: every rafter pair has a joint where the two slopes meet. Gusset plates at that joint are the usual way to do it, and it is worth building one test pair on the ground before cutting the rest.
At 14 feet wide the loft can run 10 feet deep along the back wall and still leave a 4-foot strip along the front open to the roof, so the room below does not feel capped.
Good for
- The most loft space for the footprint
- A barn look on a small building
- Converting a common gambrel shed size into a cabin
