About this plan

What the 16×16 Hip Roof Cabin is for.

A hip roof has no gable end walls, so there is no tall flat face for wind to push on. That makes it a common choice on ridgetops and in hurricane country, and the overhang on all four sides shades every wall and keeps water off the siding.

The cost is attic space: a hip roof leaves no room for a loft, so this plan keeps everything on one floor. At 16 by 16 that is a comfortable single room with space for a sleeping corner, a kitchen wall, and a stove.

A window centered on each side wall and one at the back gives even light through the day no matter how the cabin is oriented.

Good for

  • Exposed, windy sites
  • Eaves on every side to keep rain off all four walls
  • A compact one-room cabin with a low profile

Common questions

Building the 16×16 Hip Roof Cabin.

The materials for this 16x16 Hip Roof Cabin estimate at about $11,210. The biggest lines are framing ($3,683), roofing ($2,089), windows & doors ($1,430). That covers the shell: foundation, framing, sheathing, roofing, siding, windows, doors, the porch and fasteners, at typical U.S. retail prices with a 10 percent waste allowance. It does not include labor, insulation, drywall, interior finishes, plumbing, electrical, or delivery, and local lumber prices vary.

At 256 sq ft, this plan is over the 200 sq ft limit the International Residential Code (section R105.2) uses to exempt small accessory structures, so in most places that adopt that code you should expect to need a building permit. Rules vary by county, and some rural counties do not enforce a residential building code at all, so ask your local building department before you build.

The PDF has six letter-size pages: a cover sheet with the specs, a dimensioned floor plan, front and rear elevations, left and right elevations, a wall-and-roof cross-section, and a foundation plan. The materials list downloads separately as a CSV you can open in Excel, Numbers, or Google Sheets to price at your local lumber yard. There is no signup and no email required. These are concept drawings for planning and estimating, not engineered or stamped construction documents.
