About this plan

What the 24×24 Hip Roof Cabin is for.

A 24-foot square is the most floor you can get for the least wall, and a single story means nothing to climb. It fits two bedrooms, a bath, and an open kitchen and living room.

The hip roof sheds wind from every direction and puts eaves on all four walls. It leaves no room for a loft, which is why this plan keeps everything on the ground floor.

A slab foundation is the cheapest per square foot at this size and puts the floor at grade. It is also the one foundation here you cannot easily run plumbing under after the pour, so plan every drain before the concrete truck comes.

Good for

  • A full-time single-story home with no stairs or ladder
  • Windy or hurricane-prone sites
  • A slab floor for radiant heat or a garage-style build

Common questions

Building the 24×24 Hip Roof Cabin.

The materials for this 24x24 Hip Roof Cabin estimate at about $19,288. The biggest lines are framing ($6,851), siding ($2,603), sheathing ($2,408). That covers the shell: foundation, framing, sheathing, roofing, siding, windows, doors, the porch and fasteners, at typical U.S. retail prices with a 10 percent waste allowance. It does not include labor, insulation, drywall, interior finishes, plumbing, electrical, or delivery, and local lumber prices vary.

At 576 sq ft, this plan is over the 200 sq ft limit the International Residential Code (section R105.2) uses to exempt small accessory structures, so in most places that adopt that code you should expect to need a building permit. Rules vary by county, and some rural counties do not enforce a residential building code at all, so ask your local building department before you build.

The PDF has six letter-size pages: a cover sheet with the specs, a dimensioned floor plan, front and rear elevations, left and right elevations, a wall-and-roof cross-section, and a foundation plan. The materials list downloads separately as a CSV you can open in Excel, Numbers, or Google Sheets to price at your local lumber yard. There is no signup and no email required. These are concept drawings for planning and estimating, not engineered or stamped construction documents.
