Off-Grid Community

About

Aleneva is the only permanent settlement on Afognak Island, founded by Russian Old Believers who relocated north from Woodburn, Oregon in the late twentieth century. No roads connect it to anywhere, so residents reach Kodiak City or Old Harbor by boat or floatplane, and power comes from individual generators rather than any shared utility. Households keep gardens and small livestock and fish and hunt for much of their food, in a settlement built deliberately around self-sufficiency.
