Off-Grid Community

About

Chicken is a gold rush settlement at mile 65 of the Taylor Highway, established around 1898 and one of the few surviving camps of that era still occupied. There is no electricity grid, no plumbing and no cell tower, so residents run generators and handle their own water. The highway that reaches it is open only from April to mid-October, which leaves the community on its own through the winter. Long summer days on the ridge make solar a practical addition for the households experimenting with it.
