Off-Grid Community

About

McCarthy sits at the end of a 60 mile gravel road inside Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve, and it is not connected to any electrical grid. Homes and businesses run on their own diesel or gasoline generators and private power systems, which makes electricity, internet and indoor plumbing local luxuries rather than givens. The 2020 census counted 107 residents, with roughly 40 living here year round. Vehicles stop at the Kennicott River, where a footbridge and a private service bridge carry people the rest of the way into town.
