Point Baker

Off-Grid Community

About

Point Baker occupies the northern tip of Prince of Wales Island in a protected harbor opening onto Sumner Strait, with no road connection and no community electrical grid. The settlement is built on docks and walkways instead of streets, and having no road for a fire truck it answers fires with a fire boat. A 440 foot state float acts as the floating downtown, carrying the store, cafe, saloon, fuel sales, laundry and showers, community building and post office. Fourteen year-round households live here alongside three fishing and hunting lodges.
