Port Protection

Off-Grid Community

About

Port Protection is a fishing community in a sheltered harbor on the northern end of Prince of Wales Island, reachable only by boat or floatplane. No community-wide grid exists, so households run personal diesel generators, often paired with solar panels and small wind turbines, and heat with wood. The 2020 census counted 36 residents. The Wooden Wheel Trading Post serves as store, hardware counter, laundry, fuel dock and mail drop, and subsistence harvest of deer, salmon and shellfish carries much of the local economy.
