Off-Grid Community

About

Skwentna lies on the south bank of the Skwentna River where it meets Eight Mile Creek, off the Alaska road system entirely. Residents travel by air, boat and snowmachine, and the community carries no certificated electric utility, so power is generated on site. Homes are spread across a wide area and many are used seasonally. The settlement is a checkpoint at mile 72 of the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, which brings the outside world through once a year.
